SUBOXONE [Tablets/Film]

NOTE: We will be transitioning our patients to Suboxone film in early 2012.

Suboxone tablets were the first opioid medication approved for the treatment of opioid dependence in an office-based setting, allowing patients to continue with their daily lives. Suboxone tablets can also be dispensed for take-home use, just like any other medicine.

The primary active ingredient in a Suboxone tablet is buprenorphine. It also contains nalaxone, an opioid antagonist.

The naloxone is there to discourage people from dissolving the tablet and injecting it. When a Suboxone tablet is placed under the tongue, as directed, very little naloxone reaches the bloodstream, so what the patient feels are the effects of the buprenorphine.

We use Suboxone because:

- It reduces misuse of opioids
- It helps patients stay in treatment, mainly by suppressing symptoms of opioid withdrawal and decreasing cravings.
